Donut

I drew this donut a while ago for a concept I was fleshing out. I came across this quote today and decided to make this. I kinda love drawing donuts. Especially strawberry frosted…

Rewind – Button States

App Design, Buttons, Design, UI Art

This game takes place in a sci-fi world. A rustic landscape with neon lights sparingly placed throughout. I wanted the buttons to reflect the same environment. When these buttons are selected they have a neon glow.

Ultimately the project has probably changed greatly from these original assets, but I still learned a lot while working on it.

Please ignore the silly Lorem Ipsum and Ben Kingsley photo I included for the screenshot.

Monster Guard Branding

App Design, App Icon Design, Design, Logo Design

Above are the logo and app icon I designed for the recently released Monster Guard app.

The logo is hand drawn type and layered to create a 3D effect. I added a spotted texture and horns to tie in the monsters. I also wanted it to reflect a badge since the app is about accomplishing missions and learning about disasters.

As for the icon I went through several iterations before landing on this final product. Along with the client we decided to include 2 characters and the American Red Cross logo.

Additive Color Theory Applied

App Design, Background Art, Design

I was designing a bunch of stuff that was going to used in a sci-fi and wanted a glowing texture to be used in all the menu backgrounds to reflect the glowing neon lights of the city.

To achieve the texture I went back in time to my light, color, and design class. I briefly remembered additive color, the mixing of colored light to create white light. I mixed various blue and green textures layered over each other to make this final texture.

Transparency as a Design Element

App Design, Art, Buttons, Design, UI Art

I was recently obsessed with the role-playing text game A Dark Room. The game itself is comprised almost entirely of UI and text. Part of the game is maintaining a fire as the fire dies the room gets darker as does the game itself. This mechanic inspired me to redesign the UI in the game.

I created semi-transparent buttons that would show the transition of the room getting progressively darker as the fire dies out. It all added up to a beautiful transition.

Projects Past – Guess What?

App Design, App Icon Design, Buttons, Design

Not every project I have worked on had been a success. Long ago I worked on an ill-fated social trivia app. It started as the game Newsflash, but eventually evolved into Guess What.

I did the entire update that changed the game to Guess What. In less than a week I designed new scenes and completely changed the color palette of the app and all of its buttons. I also created a new more colorful app icon.

Super Bowl Play 60 Update

App Design, App Icon Design, Design, Marketing Art

Having worked at a company for several years I have become accustom to creating periodic app updates. I got to work on an update of the NFL Play 60 app. The point of the update was to promote the upcoming Super Bowl.

I mainly worked on creating new marketing materials. Above are the iTunes feature art and the app icon I created for this update. I also got to make brand new illustrations of the main character, so I had plenty of fun with that.

Monster Guard Main Menu

App Design, Buttons, Design, UI Art

An app I have been working on, Monster Guard was recently released. It was created in collaboration with the American Red Cross and Disney. It helps teach kids about what to do during a natural disaster.

You can learn more about the app here https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/monster-guard-prepare-for/id925537299?mt=8

Above is the main menu I designed for the app. I worked with a programmer to create the transitions and audio cues. You can also see a glimpse of the Logo I created for the app.
