Character Illustration Based on Maya Renders

App Icon Design, Art, Character Designs, Illustration

Sometimes I don’t get the best files to work with when it comes to creating art for promotional materials. These characters were created to run in a game not be posed and rendered at a million pixels and things get harder when I have to work with older files that were created by people I no longer have on hand to help me. Many times I have to improvise and figure out what I can do base on what I do have.

Above, all the way to the left is the rendered character I was able to pose. Unfortunately the face, hair, and clothing textures would not attach easily. So I rendered out the pose so I would have something to work with. I then illustrated the character according to his appearance in game and that is what is reflected in the character on the right.

Monster Guard – App Icon Iterations

App Design, App Icon Design, Design

Here are some of the variations of the icon I created for Monster Guard. The client ultimately selected the 3rd one in the second column. I then made several variations on that one and we finally landed on the icon you can see in my previous post and on the app in the iTunes app store.

Monster Guard Branding

App Design, App Icon Design, Design, Logo Design

Above are the logo and app icon I designed for the recently released Monster Guard app.

The logo is hand drawn type and layered to create a 3D effect. I added a spotted texture and horns to tie in the monsters. I also wanted it to reflect a badge since the app is about accomplishing missions and learning about disasters.

As for the icon I went through several iterations before landing on this final product. Along with the client we decided to include 2 characters and the American Red Cross logo.

Projects Past – Guess What?

App Design, App Icon Design, Buttons, Design

Not every project I have worked on had been a success. Long ago I worked on an ill-fated social trivia app. It started as the game Newsflash, but eventually evolved into Guess What.

I did the entire update that changed the game to Guess What. In less than a week I designed new scenes and completely changed the color palette of the app and all of its buttons. I also created a new more colorful app icon.

Super Bowl Play 60 Update

App Design, App Icon Design, Design, Marketing Art

Having worked at a company for several years I have become accustom to creating periodic app updates. I got to work on an update of the NFL Play 60 app. The point of the update was to promote the upcoming Super Bowl.

I mainly worked on creating new marketing materials. Above are the iTunes feature art and the app icon I created for this update. I also got to make brand new illustrations of the main character, so I had plenty of fun with that.
